More about Ophelia Deroy

Ophelia Deroy is a French philosopher and professor of Philosophy of Mind at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU), where she leads the Munich Interactive Intelligence Initiative and is an active member of the Graduate School in Systemic Neuroscience (GSN). With a background spanning philosophy, cognitive neuroscience, and psychology, her work is at the forefront of multi-sensory perception and metacognition, exploring how the brain integrates information from different senses and what happens when this integration breaks down.

Before joining LMU, Deroy held prominent academic positions in the UK, including serving as the Deputy Director of the Institute of Philosophy at the University of London, where she played a key role in fostering interdisciplinary research between philosophy, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence. She continues to direct CREATE (Centre for Research in Experimental Aesthetics, Technology, and Engineering), a research center dedicated to exploring the intersection of perception, cognition, and technology.
Her research investigates how the mind constructs a coherent experience from diverse sensory inputs, as well as the implications of crossmodal correspondences, sensory blending, and metacognitive awareness. She has published extensively on these topics, with her work influencing fields such as experimental psychology, human-computer interaction, and AI ethics. In addition to her academic contributions, she frequently collaborates with neuroscientists, engineers, and artists to explore how emerging technologies shape human perception and cognition.

Through her leadership at LMU and CREATE, Deroy continues to push the boundaries of philosophy of mind and cognitive science, contributing to our understanding of human experience in an increasingly digital and multisensory world.
